COSMETIC ORTHODONTICS

WIRES ARE NO LONGER PART OF THE GAME

In the past, people used to either get braces when they were in school, or they would wait until retirement to fix their crooked teeth.

There is a correlation between straight perfect teeth and success.

If we see someone that is successful it is almost implied that they will have fantastic teeth, and if they do not, we ask ourselves why that is.

For a lot of people the answer is ‘confidence’ – we are not confident with wires in our mouth.

This is where INVISALIGN steps into the picture – clear removable orthadontics.

INVISALIGN

At Smile For Life we offer a number of treatments to enhance the smile of adults, teens, and children. We understand that metal braces may not be the best option for you, so we offer clear braces and an amazing, new alternative to braces that uses clear aligners. These options minimize the appearance of braces so that you can feel more comfortable and confident during orthodontic treatment.

We have successfully treated adolescents and adults for many years and would welcome the opportunity to discuss your orthodontic needs with you.

  • Invisalign is a new method of orthodontic treatment that is nearly invisible and straightens teeth faster than traditional braces. Many adults and teens choose this method over traditional metal braces because of the convenience and the look of the aligners.

  • Invisalign uses clear, plastic aligners that fit snugly next to your teeth. The aligners are completely removable. Each aligner is worn for only two weeks. After two weeks, you simply remove the aligner and replace it with the next aligner in the series. Each aligner is designed to exert pressure on specific teeth at a specific time. The average treatment time is just 12 months with Invisalign. (Treatment times vary according to the unique needs of each patient.)

  • First, we take photographs, x-rays, and impressions of your teeth at our office and determine the final position of your teeth. Then, we send this information to Align Technology, the manufacturer of  Invisalign, and they use advanced 3D imaging and manufacturing technology to create your customised series of aligners. The average number of aligners in a series is 24, but the number of aligners is unique to each case.

  • Invisalign is comfortable because there are no brackets and wires to irritate your cheek and gum. And, because Invisalign aligners are completely removable, you may eat, brush, and floss as you usually do. There is no need to change your diet.

To learn how millions of people around the world have improved their smile without braces, please contact us. We are happy to answer your questions or set up an appointment.

TOOTH WHITENING

Your teeth may not be as white and bright as you would like because teeth naturally yellow with age. In addition, certain foods, caffeine drinks, cigarettes, wine, and even antibiotics can leave your teeth stained or discoloured.

  • If you would like to restore a healthy, white colour to your teeth, modern tooth whitening techniques can help. At Smile For Life we offer an extensive range of options to help you achieve a brighter smile.

Using safe, simple, and effective methods, we can provide you with professional tooth whitening in our pleasant and comfortable office environment, and it only takes a little over an hour. We can also tell you how to whiten your teeth at home with professional quality whitening gel.

  • Our Melbourne tooth whitening process involves the use of a bleaching agent that effectively lightens the shade of the outer layer of tooth enamel before penetrating through to the inner layer of dentin for deep rooted whiteness. The bleaching agent is applied in one of two ways, depending on your preference.

The first method involves our staff applying a high-concentration peroxide gel to your teeth using a tray that fits snugly next to your teeth. Next, we use a light source to speed up the bleaching process. Light-accelerated teeth whitening uses a light energy, such as halogen, LED, or plasma arc, in the blue light spectrum to initiate the hydrogen peroxide reaction. This method is quick—it can be completed in about an hour—and is performed by our professional staff. This method gives you the best results in the shortest amount of time, and leaves your teeth up to 8 shades whiter.

The second method is similar to the first but is done at home. You wear a thin, lightweight, customised mouth guard to hold the bleaching gel against your teeth, and you apply the gel each night for approximately two weeks. This at-home method uses a lower-concentration peroxide gel, but it is applied to your teeth over a longer period of time, so the results are similar to the in-office method.

While some tooth whitening products available in the store can offer a short term solution to discolouring, they often prove to be superficial and inconsistent because the peroxide concentration in the gel is very low. Smile for Life is one of the few offices in Melbourne to offer the three most successful products in tooth whitening: BriteSmile and Zoom 3rd Generation from Discus Dental, Opalescence from Gunz, and Polar White from Southern Dental Industries. Please contact us to learn more about teeth whitening in our office or at home.

VENEERS / LUMINEERS

Applied primarily to the front teeth, dental veneers provide a stunningly fresh look and feel to your teeth while maintaining your underlying tone and colour to create a natural looking smile. Dental veneers are composed of a thin, shell-like layer of material that is placed on the front of the teeth. They are typically made from porcelain but can also be made from a plastic resin. The glass-like quality of porcelain makes it the preferred option, with its translucent characteristics effectively mimicking the natural tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers tend to resist stains better than their resin counterparts and have superior light-reflecting properties.

Just like conventional porcelain veneers, Lumineers correct the appearance of cracked, uneven teeth and gaps between teeth. And, like porcelain veneers, Lumineers are porcelain shells that are custom-made to fit precisely over your teeth. But Lumineers are much thinner than traditional veneers. Lumineers are approximately 0.2 mm thick and conventional veneers are at least 0.5 mm thick. For comparison, the thickness of Lumineers is similar to the thickness of a contact lens.

Porcelain Veneers

  • Porcelain veneers are thin, porcelain facings custom-made to fit precisely over your teeth. They are bonded to the front surface of teeth, and they look and feel like natural teeth. If you have gaps between your teeth or if you have teeth that are stained, cracked, chipped, crooked, or uneven, porcelain veneers may be an excellent option for you to improve the appearance of your smile.

  • The process of applying veneers involves removing a small amount of each tooth’s outer enamel before bonding the veneers to the teeth. This is considered a minimally-invasive procedure and the entire process is completed over three office visits. The result is strong, naturally-looking teeth.

Lumineers

  • Another difference between Lumineers and conventional veneers is that there is no need to remove any tooth structure in order to apply Lumineers to your teeth. In this way, you maintain your entire tooth surface. This also means that the application process is much quicker and more comfortable.

  • Lumineers offer a quick and comfortable way to achieve a beautiful, bright smile and are an effective tool for overcoming the issues of uneven, cracked, and discoloured teeth. Lumineers are made out of a patented porcelain called Cerinate, which is exceptionally strong. That is why the veneers can be made very thin. The process is completed in two or three office visits.

With regular oral hygiene and dental care, Lumineers can last over 20 years. The procedure is completely reversible because your entire tooth structure is still intact.

COSMETIC IMPLANTS

If you are missing a tooth due to injury, tooth decay, or gum disease, you may find it difficult to speak clearly or chew food comfortably. In addition, you may also be embarrassed by the appearance of your smile. Smile for Life offers dental implants, a permanent solution to tooth loss. Melbourne Dental implants replace missing or damaged teeth without resorting to uncomfortable dentures or bridgework. Dental implants in Melbourne have high success rates and are one of modern dentistry’s most effective developments.

  • A dental implant functions as one of your own natural teeth and consists of a replacement root and a natural-looking crown. The implant replaces a lost tooth’s function and appearance without involving the teeth next to it, as a bridge or dentures do. The main benefit of a dental implant is that it provides solid support for the new tooth (crown).

The procedure happens in stages over a number of months. First, we place a small titanium post (the implant) into the bone socket of the missing tooth. The patient must have an established underlying bone structure for the implant to be placed. Over the next few months, the jawbone will heal around the implant, attaching the implant securely to the jaw. Once the healing is complete and the titanium post is secure, a connector (called an abutment) is attached to the post to hold the new tooth in place. Finally, a new, artificial tooth (a crown) is placed over the abutment.

Our dental implant technologies include the highest quality materials from Nobel Biocare, Straumann, and Astra Tech Dental, who are leaders in the field. The crown is made of tooth-coloured porcelain and will have the look and feel of your own natural teeth. The tooth will function as one of your own teeth because the implant is secured within your jawbone.

  • There are two types of crowns: a removable implant prosthesis and a fixed implant prosthesis. The removable type is similar to a removable denture and can be easily removed for daily cleaning or repair. This is a good choice when several teeth need to be replaced. The fixed type means that the crown is cemented or screwed onto the abutment and you cannot remove it.

The durability and the strength of dental implants means that you can once again have the ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

We at Smile For Life would be happy to provide you with a thorough analysis of your dental needs and then recommend the best options for you. For more information, please contact us.

BRACES

Traditional metal braces are still a popular and excellent choice for straightening teeth and creating a properly aligned bite. At Smile For Life, we offer a variety of braces options.

  • A very effective method for straightening teeth and correcting a misaligned bite are metal braces, sometimes in coordination with orthodontic appliances. Metal braces consist of small brackets bonded to the front surface of each tooth and connected to each other by a metal arch wire. The wire exerts force on the teeth to move them slowly to their new desired position. Orthodontic appliances can be used to expand the palate, encourage lower jaw growth, or correct other issues.
  • Some patients dislike the appearance of metal, so we offer a choice of ceramic (clear) braces. Ceramic braces are made from composite materials and blend in with your teeth so that the brackets are not as noticeable. We often put clear brackets on the front teeth and metal brackets on the back teeth, as the metal brackets are stronger than the ceramic ones. If you dislike the appearance of the metal arch wire, we offer a wire that has been coated with tooth-coloured paint.

These options help to minimize the appearance of braces and increase your confidence during orthodontic treatment.

Feel free to ask us about these options and we will help you determine which is best for you. Please call us on 03 9645-7888 for an appointment or further information.

GUM DISEASE

If tartar deposits build up on the teeth, they can harbor bacteria next to the gum, which can result in gum disease. Inadequate cleaning and upkeep of oral hygiene can be a major contributing factor to gum disease. Once a bacterial infection establishes itself, it attacks the gums, bone, and ligaments that support the teeth and jaw. Left untreated, gum disease can be the root cause of bleeding, swollen, and receding gums as well as bad breath and periodontal disease, which can result in tooth loss.

  • Early detection and treatment of gum disease is the most effective way of alleviating the problem and preventing long term or extensive damage to the mouth. Therefore, regular dental checkups are vital in preventing gum disease.

  • Regular dental checkups and professional cleaning, combined with consistent daily hygiene, can effectively prevent and treat gum disease. Brushing twice and flossing at least once a day can help to combat the build-up of plaque and the gradual hardened tartar that accumulates around the teeth and gums.

  • If we do see signs of early gum disease, our professional staff provides scaling and the careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and bacterial toxins within the deeper parts of the periodontal pockets. We first use an ultrasonic instrument, which uses vibrations to remove larger pieces of tartar. Then we use smaller, hand instruments to scrape the remaining tartar. This is usually a painless procedure and effectively alleviates the concern of gum disease.

If you do have infected gums, we can also provide topical antibiotic treatment, applying the antibiotics directly to the gum surface. This treatment is painless. The antibiotics are composed of time-released granules that are released over a period of weeks. We can also prescribe oral antibiotics for gum disease.

In more extreme cases, where the gum tissue surrounding the teeth has become sufficiently infected by periodontal disease, surgery may be necessary to remove the affected area, and restorative methods may be needed.

  • In order to maintain good oral health, you need to combine consistent, at home practices with regular professional dental cleanings and check-ups. Together we can help your teeth and gums stay healthy for a lifetime! For more information or to make an appointment, please feel free to call us on +61 (3) 9645-7888

ANTI-SNORING TREATMENT

Living with the side effects of persistent snoring and the associated lack of sleep (for both the snorer and the bed partner) can be frustrating, exhausting, and even dangerous. Headaches, daytime sleepiness, irritability, and a loss of productivity are the results of not getting enough sleep. In addition, the risk of other health issues increases from sleep deprivation, as does the risk of car accidents due to impaired reaction times.

  • The sound of snoring results from air moving through the back of the mouth, nose, and throat. If this area is restricted, the snoring can be loud and annoying, and the restriction can result in obstructive sleep apnoea— pauses in breathing during sleep because of a physical block to airflow. Sleep apnoea has been medically linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Most chronic snorers have some kind of sleep apnoea.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS SNORING
